Crowell Concert Hall
Crowell Concert Hall is the main music performance venue at Weslyan University in Middletown, CT. The concert hall as modeled using the CATT-Acoustics design software. This geometric ray tracing method is the premier application for architectural acoustic design. The computer model was based on the "as-is" existing hall configuration and was then modified for the renovated design. The acoustical design was an iterative process, performed in close collaboration with the owner and the project architect, to achieve the best possible acoustic results within project constraints. This project was selected for the 1999 American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut (ACEC/CT) Engineering Excellence Award.

Numerical calculations of acoustical parameters are some of the results of the modeling process. Another result is the "auralization" of the modeled space, allowing the designer to "hear" what the space will sound like, analogous to a visual "walk-through" via computer.

For both the piano and the drum samples, note the muddiness in the "as-is" condition compared to the clarity for the final renovation design. For the drum samples try to compare the "as-is" and final design snare hits and also the hi-hat.
